Coolest lawyer ever

From ABC News online:

Michael Kirby addresses the Griffith Uni graduating law students.

The retiring judge said he did not want to be tedious, so he dived straight into what he said was the most important thing he had discovered in life.

"I refer to love. Love for one another. Love for our community. Love for others everywhere in the world.

"Love, you see, transcends even scholarship, cleverness and university degrees. It is greater than pride and it's greater than wealth. It endures when all worldly vanities fade."

He urged the graduates to take love into their future workplaces.

I heard him on the radio saying this stuff, and it certainly made my heart glad. And then I thought, well what about  William Deane with all the brave and wonderful stuff he did on reconciliation when he was G-G, and Brennan and Mason. And Ron Wilson. And Gibbs.

The High Court in the 80s and 90s was full of cool lawyers.

It is a little known fact that all are (or were, viz. Gibbs and Wilson) keen cyclists too.

The thing that the Kirbster does not love is the doctrine of precedent, a golden thread which runs through the common law in much the same way that the presumption of innocence does.

This entry of yours Andrew is quite clearly the result of a SWOT analysis about why you get too few comments for your posts! A broadening of your market appeal.

Actually, I almost stopped halfway through the post, as I thought to myself … what the hell do I know about law, and there could be also sorts of reasons why Kirby and the other dudes were totally, like, whack. And my readership is about 50% lawyers, by my calculation.

Do the current High Court all go for a spin round the lake at lunch time?

And how many golden threads can the common law have? Is it some kind of tapestry with ‘bling’?
